In local Bengali the word “Sundarban” means beautiful jungle or forest; “sundar” which means beautiful and “ban” which means forest or jungle.   The Sundarban is the largest mangrove forest in the world and is also home to the world famous Royal Bengal Tiger; the largest Tiger Reserve in all of India with an estimated 450 Tigers living in their natural habitat.  The Sundarban is actually a series of small islands and estuaries leading into and out of the famous Ganges River and further out to sea which becomes the Bay of Bengal!!  The area is located south – southeast of Kolkata and borders and shares with that of Bangladesh.   From Kolkata the area can be easily visited in one full day allowing approximately three hours driving time in each direction to the main village where one then takes local houseboats to cruise up and down the small rivers…
